The berries produced in early summer are eaten by over 40 species of birds and many mammals. Laevis (the Allegheny- or smooth serviceberry). Canadensis (the shadblow serviceberry) and A. Amelanchier arborae (the downy serviceberry), A. the plant is a shrub (i.e., a woody plant with several stems growing from the base) Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon Serviceberry) - large abundant maroon fruits up to 0.5' in diameter, 15 tall by 10 wide clump former. Downy shadbush gets its common name from the velvety, downy-hairy undersides of its leaves. Serviceberry trees, or as folks around these parts call them Sarvisberry trees, are known by many names: Juneberry, Shadbush, Saskatoon Serviceberry, Currant Tree or Pigeon Berry. A Shadbush Serviceberry is similar looking to the Saskatoon Serviceberry, which has slightly different white flowers and rich purple-colored berries.
